Balance

The internet is a vital resource as well as the others for which we pay the bills, and yet it is handled by private subjects which can impose whatever conditions they want when antitrust is not really working (i.e. it has no real effect since these companies are willing to pay amounts to keep doing illegal things more profitable than what would be doing the lawful one).

What would be the solution?

We could say the internet should be handled by the public administration, as its purpose is to provide services to the community, but unfortunately, after some time, the cost of the service become so high it is no longer sustainable and the service would return to the private side, in an unfruitful shifting, unfruitful for the community, at least.

In some countries it seems the balance between the two sides (private and public) is best maintained than in others, as on one side the public function is there to control the private companies so as they do not overcome certain limits and, on the other side, the winning politician is really an elected person, who has really the function to keep the public sector in line (regardless the parties), avoiding too much increase of unjustified costs; instead, in some countries this balance is missing, as the winning politician is actually an expression of a huge and branched apparatus which obviously has no will to limit itself.
